Wisdom Group

This coming Tuesday evening we will be contemplating the quote:
"The way to transform what you believe about yourself is to unlearn what you have learned.
When you unlearn, your faith returns to you, your personal power increases, and you can invest your faith in new beliefs."
from the book, Voice of Knowledge by Don Miguel Ruiz

Thursday afternoon, we will discuss the various responses to the question:
"How do we live our lives without expectations and at the same time, create/dream our personal dream?"

peace and love

Well, that's interesting about unlearning...last week or so I read an awesome book called "Made To Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die" and it started wita problem in communicating is the "curse of knowledge" because when we know what we are thinking and feeling...we express and we assume others can understand us...but we are feeding them our information while we ALREADY know the conclusion...so it messes up because we aren't communicating by filling in all the details.

Sounds like a good evening ahead...

Sounds like an interesting book, Candy.
I think "unlearning" is such a great concept! That means to me that we are not stuck but that we can be free. Free to choose again.

I have always been told we dont unlearn we just learn new ways of dealing with stuff and life. I have no idea really. Is there really a way to unlearn something. Or do we just change our behaviors to something else and leave what is not good alone. Just like forget it?

Thankyou for the clear example Joy.
Indeed, why keep believing in such a damaging lie?

Tweetey,
I know that words can have many different meanings for different people....so I don;t think it matters that it is called unlearning or not. The underlying idea, is that we can CHOOSE what to believe in. And if what we blieve in now doesn't make us feel good than we can choose beliefs that serve us better.
If it is a strong original belief than it will take preserverence to break it and replace it with a new strong one.

Well, I don't think we can "unlearn" but we can always contest in ourselves what we think we know.

To this day, there are many people who believe that the water goes down the drain differently in Australia than it does in North Amerca! Even some teachers think this is true.

So it's easy to pick up false information told in a believable manner.

It is imprtant to question authority that is one of the best ways to learn if we have silly beliefs or real experience.

The problem with knowledge is we assume every body knows what we know so we don't ry to communicate ina simple manner.

Isn't the purpose of all this self inquiry so that we can be close to the people who are important to us? If we think we know more than others, or we don't try to communicate simply and with our emotions...we are still stuck in ignorance and intolerance.

In the context of having the intent to "transform what you believe about yourself is to unlearn..."

Like Joy said, I too, have things I beieve about myself that I learned at a very young age. Some of what I learned are lies. As a child I didn't know the difference.
Now as a conscious person, I can examine these beliefs and let them go if I choose to.

Joy,
Some of those early learnings are at an emotional level. I think music is very helpful in soothing our child self. Actually, I think my child self is my authentic self.
