Heaven On Earth

As Promised, I returned today to do more swimming and basically worshipping the Earth. Leah and I swam up river and kept discovering incredible pool after pool with crazy beautiful rock formations.
What you can't see, though I tried to photogragh them, were the huge school of fish. The average one being 20 inches or so.
Again I was amazed to be the only 2 humans enjoying this, in a city of 100,000 and this spot is 5-10 minutes away.
Some one has to worship the earth and I am willing to do it!

Such amazing pictures. Thank you for sharing them.

I want to worship the Earth too! Have you got room for me in your backpack? ;-)

When the earth is as beautiful as this, how can we fail to worship it. Your photographs are wonderful!

A river is a great way to recognize our connectness. At my friend Mar's cottage in Ontario we all have to remember that what ever we do in the river, affects someone downstream.

When we farm or eat farm products, our actions rape rivers.

( Notice where hurricanes and tsunamis breach the earth is always where we grow our beloved addictions:bread and rice. All the rocks and trees have been cleared for irrigation and farming, so rivers are weakened, unable to stall or halt the floods)

If we want to worship the earth...change the way we lock up food and sell it back to ourselves. Stop buying fossil fuels...oil rigs in ocean outside New Orleans likely compromised the ocean floor and allowed even more water to enter up the weakened Mississippi.

Red,Jennifer, Tanya and Minerva,
Thanks, my daughter's camera has turned out to be a great investment for me!
And yes, come visit me anytime, we can go together to worship some more.
Candy,
Rivers ARE great teachers. You would be saddened to know that just to the left of these photos is a nasty clear cut.
I live in a communtiy made of small farms. They are against the Giant Machine-type farms that are putting them out of a livlihood.

British Columbia is awesome, I would love to be there right now sketching at that spot! I would be captivated for hours on end. I think those 20 inch fish must salmon.

Hi Tim,
I was thinking salmon or steelhead? I went back today with a friend. It was her birthday and we had a lovely lovely swim.

Timmer said...

Ooh, sounds sweet! Probably steelhead.

I know it's awful to be jealous, but I'm so jealous that you get to live near such beauty. The optimist in me is whispering, "You could find such beauty, too--if only you were looking!"

I will start looking. :)

Hi Heather,

If it makes you feel any better. I have lived here for almost 20 years and just found this supreme spot this year. I DID have to look.

Candy is right that farming hurts rivers. Grazing of cattle particularly causes erosion and silting. Anywhere that natural vegetation is cut from the side of rivers and streams causes the stream to warm, and this affects the whole cycle of life in the stream. This is not to mention the pesticides and other crap that finds its way into streams.

Sometimes, we like what happens to rivers when we mess with them, but that does't make it good. An example of this is the Bow River below Calgary. The filtered discharge from sewage treatment in Calgary has upped the nutrition content in the river over the years, which in turn has created an environment favouring mayflies and caddis flies. The abundance of flies caused an environment favourable to trout. In other words, the river holds more and bigger trout because we dump treated sewage into the stream. It will be interesting to see what happens to that stream in a few years with the rapid expansion of Calgary.

Yes, it will be interesting to study what happens to the humans that are eating these new and "improved" trout.
eeeew.
